a girl and her accessories

As long as I can remember, I've been obsessed with hair accessories.  I was that girl in high school who put maroon and silver ribbons in her hair every Friday before a football game, and I'm pretty sure Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen were my hair idols in middle school (judge as you will... their butterfly clips were fabulous).

Well, some things just don't change, though I hope I make better choices these days!  Forever 21 is actually one of my favorite places to get unique, affordable headbands and clips, and I pretty much have one for every outfit!  When I started my job here, though, I gave it a couple weeks before I pulled out the super distracting ones just so no one would prematurely decide I was a nut job.  They're pretty used to them now!

Anyway, in the past couple weeks, I think I've accumulated more hair accessories than normal, and I just have to share them!

This one was actually given to me by one of my coworkers, Kira, who is super tiny and decided it was too big for her head.  I love a good hair flower!

This next one is from Julian's in Chapel Hill, which is probably the frattiest store in North Carolina.  It's full of beautiful clothing, both Carolina-related and not!  Alexander Julian even designed the men's basketball uniforms (hence the argyle).  Bekah helped me pick from all the ones they had, and I'll so enjoy wearing it on game days!

Ok, so this last one is going to blow your mind.  Remember Lady Gaga's (quite literal) hair bow?

Well...

My FABULOUS friend from college, Laura, sent me this headband from a Halloween store in Chapel Hill!  She wore one to the Lady Gaga concert in Raleigh, and I just died when I saw the pictures on facebook.  She immediately sent me one of my own, and I couldn't be more thankful or excited!  I guess we know what I'm going to be for Halloween!

bag lunch

I'll go ahead and admit that a lunchbox seems like a pretty lame thing to blog about, but if you're as in love with your lunchbox as I am with mine, you'll understand!  It gives me that extra little push to pack my lunch everyday, which is so much healthier and saves a TON of money!

Shortly after I moved here, my mom attended a thirty-one party hosted by one of her friends, which is kind of like a Tupperware or a Mary Kay party.  She knew I needed an insulated bag to pack my lunch in everyday, so when she asked if I wanted one, of course I said YES!  I trusted her enough to pick a pattern I would love, and she didn't fail me one bit!

I decided to take a break from the monogramming and get my full first name on it.  Advantage: not nauseating everyone with overuse of my initials.  Disadvantage: every single soul on the Metro knows my name.

I usually stick an ice pack in there, too, but the insulation keeps everything nice and cold (and I don't have to take over the office fridge).

Definitely a must for every working girl!

fall shopping!

Let me apologize in advance to all my male readers, because this post is 100% about CLOTHES!!!  Apart from the fact that fall is my favorite season (uh, hello?  Football and apple cider.  What else could you want?), it's also an excellent excuse to makeover your wardrobe!  Both my subscription to Vogue magazine and the fact that Molly is my roommate are merely enablers.  Plus, Molly works a couple nights a week at Ann Taylor Loft, so you better believe we put her 50% discount to good use this weekend.  In fact, I don't think a single thing I bought was full price, even before her discount!  Take a look at what I brought home on Sunday (and Mom, don't worry, my credit card is in one piece)!

These next three tops are all from Ann Taylor Loft, and this first one I actually bought in a dark chartreuse.  It's so comfortable, but I love the whimsical, random gathers.

This top probably makes me look like wall art, but that's ok because it was $14!

I especially love that the color of this top goes with so many cardigans and can easily be worn in any season!

And the rest of these are from Gap, which has been one of my favorite stores as long as I can remember.  Their stuff lasts forever!

This is their boyfriend sweater which is made to fit a little loose.  I'm not really big on the sloppy look, so I just went down a couple sizes and bought one that fit.  But it's 75% cashmere for $11!  Crazy!  (And yes, Dad, I did buy the red one.  I know you're proud.)

This was one of those tops I put on and knew immediately I couldn't live without.  Perfect pink color + ruffles + light, airy, unfussy cotton = yes, please.

I'm not going to lie, I thought this dress would be a disaster.  I normally don't wear dresses with drawstrings, but this one cinches in just the right place, and it's office-appropriate.  Plus, it has ruffles and I have the perfect pair of navy and black heels to wear with it, so I couldn't let it go!

And, last but not least, I bought these two super-soft t-shirts for $15 each!  I will probably live in them, so you've been warned.  Also, I will probably buy all the other colors after payday on Friday.

I can't wait to mix and match all of these!  And, since I had a Groupon for $25 for $50 worth of clothes at Gap, I paid so much less than I would have otherwise!  What are some of your favorite fall trends?

my almost first sick day

Y'all.  It is a downright miracle I even made it to work on Friday.  Let me just go ahead and warn you, this post is going to be heavy on words and humor, but low on actual pictures of what happened, except for the ones Google Images will provide to help me narrate.

Ok, so one of the magazines I absolutely adore is Real SimpleIt's pretty much a guide to everything you ever need to know to make your life more efficient, fun, colorful, etc.  And if it's not in there, you don't need to know it.

Well, this month, they did a story on a woman who has struggled with anorexia all her life.  She even admitted to being 5'9" and getting down to 110 lbs.  I'm 5'9", and I think I would eat an entire tub of Crisco before I ever made it to 110 lbs.  And she mentioned watching pro-anorexia videos on YouTube, which made my imagination run wild, and there's something you should know about me.  Dramatic health stories involving self-inflicted pain make me pass out.  I'm not even speaking figuratively.  The first (and only) time I ever fainted was in middle school youth group surrounded by metal chairs as some girl talked about her body totally seizing up on her.  Let's just say I didn't go down quietly.  So, even as I sat on the bus reading this woman's horrible story, I began to feel light-headed and clammy, and I was pretty sure someone was going to have to scrape me off the Pentagon sidewalk.  Classy.  I couldn't even move or put my head between my knees because there were people sitting in front of me and beside me, and I valued the fact that I seemed normal to them more than my consciousness.  So, I stumbled off the bus at the Pentagon and sat down on a bench, pretending to rifle through my purse just so I could bend over and get some blood back in my head.  It worked, but of course I made my way down to the Metro station just in time to see my train pull away.  Seven minutes until the next train.  Well done.

So, I prayed to God that I would be able to stand up until the next train came, because the only people who sit on the floor of the Metro station are the catatonic homeless who are smart enough to find air conditioning.  Finally, the train came, and I got crowd-pushed to the back of the car, where there were plenty of occupied seats and very few poles to hold onto.  So, I found the nearest pole and clutched it tightly until some five-foot man with little to no sense of personal space decided my armpit would be a fantastic shelter for his overgrown ponytail.  So, under my arm he stood, as I locked my elbow and willed myself to not run into him everytime the Metro driver hit the brakes.  Let's just say his head didn't clear my ribcage and any kind of contact we made would have scarred me for life.

Not even five seconds after this horrible munchkin entered my life, someone asked me if we were on the Red line train.  Yes sir, that's exactly what that big sign over your head screaming YELLOW means.  The Bill Engvall who lives in my head handed him this...

...but I helped him and made sure he made his transfer to the Red line when he was supposed to.  Fortunately, Shorty McShortington got off at L'Enfant Plaza and I only had to deal with him all the way across the Potomac River (where's that eight-foot shark when you need him?).

While I was changing trains at Chinatown, I believe I could have set up my own concierge business and easily retired in the five minutes I spent helping lost tourists find their way to Metro Center (other platform, sir... you know that one with the big sign that says Shady Grove VIA METRO CENTER?!?  It's not lying to you!) and "Penn Station" (sir, that's in New York City.  You've got a few more hours ahead of you).  To be fair, that guy wanted Union Station and really underestimated how badly I just wanted to crawl into the out-of-order elevator with a sleeping bag and an aromatherapy candle and forget I had to be anywhere.

Okay, so I got to Union Station in one piece and bolted to the leftmost line for the escalator (because if you don't move intentionally to the escalator climbing lane, you're going to be riding your way up the right side behind a sea of Birkenstocks and American flag t-shirts faster than you can say 'fanny pack').

I got all the way to the top, so close to sweet freedom and the ability to move under my own power, when the escalator technician, who had creepily eyed all of us as we stepped on, threw the escalator in reverse and sent everyone, locals and tourists, elderly and stroller-bound, kitten heels and Crocs, stumbling over ourselves and each other.

I wanted to cry.  No, actually, I wanted to run back down the other side and punch that technician in the FACE.  But that would have required relinquishing my newborn freedom, and it tasted too good.  Finally, I made it to my office, my desk, and my sweet coffee cup.  I thought it would all be okay.  No one could trip me or invade my personal space or starve themselves and live to write about it.  Not ten seconds later, the phone rang.  "Hi, this is Mary Jo from Rock Valley... your website isn't working."

Happy Monday!

brendan james concert!

On Wednesday night, Molly and I went back to what is pretty much our favorite place, Jammin' Java in Vienna, and saw Brendan James!  You've probably already seen Brendan on my blog a couple times, but he's also a UNC alum who was a member of the Clef Hangers a cappella group, and I think it took a mere 24 hours after I introduced his music to Molly for her to become just as obsessed as I am.  It's rare that you find a singer who sounds just as wonderful live as he does on his album, but, if it's possible, Brendan sounds even better.  His songs are a mix of quick, carefree, roll-down-the-windows-and-drive-anywhere tunes and slower, more poignant ones, and he's also one of the few artists for whom I've downloaded the entire album.  Pretty sure I can count them on one hand.  So, of course, we were blown away by his concert, and, of course, I took pictures!

The opening act was Jason Ager.  Jury's still out on him, actually.

Cue awkward self-portraits to prove we were there...

BRENDAN JAMES!!!

And, of course, we got a picture with him afterward!  I felt less awkward talking to him since the fact that we both went to UNC gave me something to say, but I have to admit that after I said that and introduced him to Molly, I ran out of things to say and TOTALLY threw her under the bus!  I got a severe case of word vomit and told him how Molly had written his lyrics on my facebook wall and admitted to having his music on repeat all day.  She just looked at me and said, "Really?!  REALLY, LAUREN?!?"  I felt so terrible, especially because Molly HATES getting her picture taken with famous people.  She calls it "Mickey Mouse"-ing, a la Disney World.  I did apologize profusely, and I'm banking on the fact that Brendan has forgotten all about it today!  And he did go in for a big hug after I told him I was a UNC alum, so that was happy!

Anyway, here are a couple videos of his performance.  The second one is hilarious, because he did a spontaneous cover of Jamie Foxx and T-Pain's "Blame It on the Alcohol".  Totally brill!

Have a great weekend, and go download some Brendan James!

"ballston, rosslyn, courthouse, the clizzle dizzle!"

I absolutely love living in Arlington.  I really do.  When I first got the job here in DC, I thought I might want to live in the District, just because my office is two blocks from the Capitol and there's so much history there (I know, massive understatement).  But it really is fantastic to get out of the city at the end of the day, and I've always been a suburbs girl anyway, so it just felt like a natural fit.  And I adore having so much amazing shopping nearby!  Arlington is also super classy, which I LOVE.  But sometimes that means a little self-deprecating humor is in order.  So, from the guy who brought you the Metro Rap on one of my posts last week, here is the Arlington Rap!  Straight out tha 'hood.

amanda's first bridal shower!

The third reason I went home last weekend was to get to go to Amanda's first bridal shower!  I'm her Maid of Honor, and I couldn't be more excited to go through this amazing period in her life with her.  It's really hard to be this far away as she does all her planning (and deals with all the stress), but she has been so understanding, and I know the whole event will be beautiful.  This particular shower was for both Amanda and Nick (her fiance), and it was hosted by the amazing Mount family.  They grilled burgers for everyone, and they were delicious!  Plus, it was a wonderful time for me to catch up with all the important people in Amanda's life, including many of her church friends.  And, I got to complete one of my first official Maid of Honor duties - writing down the gifts for thank you notes!  (We all know how I feel about thank you notes, so I was happy to do it.)

Jessica, Amanda, and me!  It was soooo good to see Jessica after too much time apart!  And she's engaged now, too!  woo hoo!  (p.s. I know, sweet sunburn.)

The cooler from Melinda (see, I remembered!), which will be excellent for tailgates!

The massive toolkit for all of Amanda's future "Honey-Do" lists!  Nick likes it now, but let's check with him in fifteen months.

Maggie, Amanda, and I on the three month countdown!

BFFs since we were fifteen and still note-passing in class.  Never got in trouble, not once!

Roomies until December!

Amanda, I am so proud of you for how well you have pulled everything together.  I know wedding planning hasn't been easy, but I don't have to tell you it will be so worth it!  You are going to be so gorgeous on your wedding day, and it will be such an honor for me to stand next to you as you and Nick pledge your lives to one another.  (FYI:  I haven't read your vows, so it would be great if you could give me a rough estimate of how many tissues I'll need to stuff down my dress.  Thanks.)  Love you!

unc v. georgia tech

Another one of the perks of going home last weekend was getting to go to another Carolina football game!  And, to make it even more fun, Bekah came with my family and me!  Even though Carolina lost (again), we had so much fun getting dressed up and walking around campus before the game.  (And we got our frat on at Julian's, of course).  But I got to see lots of old friends, and Bekah got to see some ACC football.  Plus, she's a Georgia fan, so she had no problem pulling against Georgia Tech!

First, we got to see Leanna play on Franklin Street in front of the new Krispy Kreme!

And then they played in the middle of the street during a red light!

Drumline warming up in the Pit...

Big warm up in front of Wilson Library before heading to the stadium!

"We dress as if we're going to church on gamedays, because this is God's country."

Here Comes Carolina!

We got SO burned during the game.  Turns out noon games = brutal heat and relentless sun!  But that didn't keep us from partying... we got a head start on celebrating Dad's birthday, and Mom made delicious turkey burgers!

mmmmm cake...

Bekah even got some sweet pink-sided Phi Mu Ray Ban-ish sunglasses from one of my good friends' sisters, who didn't even think twice about just taking them off her face and giving them away... what a sweet girl!  And Bekah looks super cool in them, but I'll let her provide you with pictures.  ;)

Well, so much for Carolina football being on top of things this week, but the rest of the conference did a lot better!  We have Rutgers next weekend... go heels!

happy birthday, dad!

This weekend was especially fun because I got the chance to help my dad celebrate his birthday (which is actually today)!  Mom made a DELICIOUS chocolate cake, and we had chicken casserole and did present-opening on Sunday after church.  If you know my dad, you know that he loves his family the most, but he loves NC State a LOT.  So, I decided the perfect gift would be getting a picture that was taken of the two of us at an NC State football game last year blown up into an 8 x 10 and framed.  Snapfish did it quickly and inexpensively, and he loved it so much!

Here's the actual picture...

...and here he is with the 8 x 10!

He also blew out some candles...

And even though Dad is a die-hard NC State alum and fan (he reminds my sister and I often that his degree from NC state paid for our UNC educations), he was and is always there to support us in the marching band!

Basically, he's been an amazing, amazing father since I was this big...

...and I'm so thankful for our special relationship!  I love you so much, Dad, and thank you for all the important things you have taught me, like how to check my oil, how to love football like you do, and how to be a hardworking, moral Christ-follower with a big heart!  You are the greatest!

Also, a shout-out to my first dog, Reba, who turns 15 today!  I love you, sweet girl!
